Prior to the establishment of the organisation Richard Gauld served a four year arboriculture and horticulture apprenticeship with Dundee City Council before attending Askham Bryan College, York to achieve an NDH, majoring in arboriculture.
This followed with two years practical experience with a tree surgery business before establishing himself with Cherwell District Council in Oxfordshire as the Local Authority Tree Officer. He undertook this job for a period of eight years and then moved to Dumfries & Galloway where Richard Gauld, Tree Specialist was formed in 1999.
With such a variety of both practical tree surgery and regulatory arboricultural work experience ranging over 30 years Richard Gauld is passionate about the conservation and correct management of trees within our rural and urban landscapes. That being so he has created and developed a business that is very proud to have over 70% repeat customers formed mostly from client recommendation, ranging from individual householders to charities, private organisations including housing associations, local authorities and rural estates.
The team of staff/operatives who work for Richard Gauld, Tree Specialist are all highly UK trained to current NPTC, City & Guilds, Lantra qualifications. All staff/operatives are hard working, health and safety aware, polite, good communicators. Whilst “the best person for the job” is always recruited, we like to encourage job opportunities in Dumfries and Galloway for local people. We work closely with the SRUC at the Barony Campus in Dumfries to provide work experience opportunities for Arboricuture and Forestry students.

Tree surgery isn’t just about felling trees. As well as the traditional methods of tree, hedge and large shrub management, which is carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the British Standard 3998:2010, recommendations for tree work.
Richard Gauld can advise and provide expertise on tree/woodland management plans, specialist veteran tree care, tree health diagnosis, tree surveys in relation to planning and construction to British Standard 5837:2012 and LOLER inspections.
